A shorter plate reduces the space around a suitable registration. It does not make the characters smaller to force a longer registration onto the plate.

Which short plate size fits my registration?

Count letters and numbers, excluding the space. The size checker uses the same registration limits as the builder to show the available short formats. A longer registration can rule out a shorter plate; we do not shrink the characters to force it to fit.

Measure the vehicle as well as the registration.

A character limit is only one part of choosing a plate. Check the width and height of the mounting area, the position of any screw holes and whether a holder covers part of the plate. Check front and rear separately, then review any badge and finish options in the builder.

What documents will I need?

You need proof of your name and address, plus evidence that you can use the registration. A V5C, V750 or V778 can establish entitlement. Check the full GOV.UK list linked below for accepted documents.
