SO, WHAT ARE 3D NUMBER PLATES?
It’s a common question we see and also get asked, paired with the typical ‘are the 3D number plates road legal and will they pass an MOT?”
First, as a brief explanation to the initial question; 3D Gel number plates are Gloss Black digits, furthermore, they are made from a special gel resin, produced in the latest Charles Wright font which are then applied directly onto the front of a number plate.
To answer the second question ‘Are 3D Number Plates Road Legal And MOT Compliant’ the answer is, ours are. We can’t however, say this as a blanket yes, this is due to there being many companies out there who sell non-compliant number plates that haven’t been approved by the BMNA.

The quick and simple answer is, yes! Well, almost yes anyway. It’s an almost, because not all 3D number plate websites are as scrutinous when it comes to buying their digits. HOW ARE 3D NUMBER PLATES MADE?
Surprisingly to most, it’s a very simple process. Many plate sites want you to believe that there is something complex within this process and will often overcomplicate the process on purpose. So, with that in mind, we’ve listed the step by step process below.
The Process Explained
- First, we prepare the reflective. This is put through a thermal printer to apply our supplier details and the BSAU code. This is the seemingly random letters or words at the bottom of the number plate.
- Next, we peel off a protective film that covers the 3M glue that is applied to the rear of the plate and is then put into a purpose built electric number plate laminator and the prepared reflective is then fed into the same machine.
- As the Acrylic and the Reflective are fed into the machine, they pass through a set of compression rollers that squeeze the two together, this ensures that they form a strong bond and pushes all trapped air out from between the two.
- Once they come out of the machine, they are inspected, trimmed of any excess relfective and passed to our 3D production team.
- Now, it’s time to apply the digits. But first, the number plates need to need put into a number plate jig. This is so we can make sure that the digits are applied uniformly and ruler straight.
- Next, each digit is carefully applied to the plate one at a time using a stencil. Each stencil is specially sized to allow both the aplication of the digit inside and also, to correctly space the digits apart to ensure they’re compliant.
- Finally, once all digits are applied, they’re inspected, packaged and shipped directly to your door!
